In this edition you can find an invitation to a lunch meeting with the confidential advisors, an inspiring interview with Prof. Zofia Lukszo, DEWIS Chair, about the important role supervisors have in creating a sense of social safety and information about our upcoming development trainings.

Culture change is the main focus of the Plan for change on social safety

At the heart of the Plan for change on social safety is the promotion of cultural change. Developed in collaboration with insights from DEWIS and various stakeholders across the organisation, it underscores the need for cultural change to strengthen social safety and drive tangible progress, i.e. in increasing the representation of women in science at TU Delft. Based on your valuable contributions, collected through idea boxes distributed across faculties, we're pleased with TU Delft's commitment to prioritise the need for cultural change and to keep an eye on desired long-term cultural change and what is needed to achieve it. DEWIS will continue to organise activities that contribute to the necessary cultural change, e.g. workshops or theatre plays to create more awareness and to start the conversations about our social norms.

How to foster psychological safety in academia - conversation cards

These conversation cards, How to Foster Psychological Safety in Academia, are developed by the Dutch Network of Women Professors as a conversation starter on psychological safety. The cards are based on the KNAW advisory report ‘Social Safety in Dutch Academia. From Paper to Practice’ (2022) and are designed to help us delve deeper into psychological safety, to understand diverse perspectives, to reflect on our thoughts, actions and leadership responsibilities, and to collectively contribute to finding solutions with regard to tackling undesirable behavior.
The cards are designed with the belief that collective engagement and leadership will have a lasting impact on the academic community.

It would be good if supervisors are not only excellent in their field, but are also good people managers. Make them aware of automatisms and reflexes, include this in annual appraisals.’

Interview with DEWIS Chair, Prof. Zofia Lukszo, in ‘De Ingenieur’

“In my view, diversity and inclusion (D&I) should be a top priority and something to be proud of. TU Delft strives for excellence in research and education and wants to be a leader in sustainability. D&I should be added to this.” Zofia also stresses the important role supervisors have in creating a sense of social safety. They set the culture in the department or group.

Strategy, focus and your relationship with time

DEWIS is organising the two-day training ‘Surviving Academia’ on 12 and 26 September on campus.
In your academic career, you are often with one leg in your current position and with the other already focusing on the next project. Also, tasks and responsibilities can be quite unclear and everybody asks for your time and contributions in for instance cooperation, teaching and co-supervision. This in-between position regularly leads to an unclear work load, a work load that is too high, or conflicts about tasks, responsibilities and even authorship. How can you shape your academic position and make it the best time of your life? How can you create calm, focus and concentration in your work?
