In this edition you can read about the phenomenon of Implicit Bias in an interview with Prof. Sabine Roeser, the Save-the-date for the Theatre Play:‘Danger: Implicit Bias at Work!’ on Diversity Day and we take a look back at and forward to some of our inspiring networking events!

We need more critical bystanders to speak up. As a leader, we need to set an example by using careful language, continuously reflecting on our choice of word and also recruiting and being open to feedback from others.

Save-the-date Theatre play: ‘Danger: Implicit Bias at Work!’

All TU Delft staff members are invited to attend the Theatre play: ‘Danger: Implicit Bias at Work!’ on Diversity Day, 4 October 2022

‘Danger: Implicit Bias at Work!’ is a 40-minute theatre play that examines the language and mechanisms in academia that are discriminating and stigmatizing.

We have invited the theatre company the Dutch Actors’ Society to help unravel the phenomenon of Implicit Bias. They will present a humorous, interactive theatre play where we follow the careers of four academics, three women and one man. Their careers span a period of 15 years, from the present day to 2037.

The play explores in a humorous way how implicit associations causes women to get treated differently and how gendered perceptions, comments and microaggressions can negatively affect women’s performance and career paths. During the play, active interaction is sought with the audience. The play is followed by a discussion led by a moderator.

There is are two possibilities to attend the play: in the morning from 10 hr to 12 hr followed by a lunch or in the afternoon from 14 hr to 16 hr followed by drinks.

Spring Networking Dinner May 2022
I had the chance of getting to know a number of inspiring women whose stories and experiences I could relate to. I also got nice feedback on who I am and what I have achieved in my professional career so far. What I enjoyed about the event the most was its social component ensuring slow thresholds for exchanging experiences with women in various stages of their career.

Look back Virtual Coffee (06)

During this Virtual Coffee we discussed building inclusive organizations. Everyone wants to belong and feel included, but what does that mean at work? What makes you feel included? What can we do to make create an inclusive working environment?

Danielle Stekelenburg, partner at Bain and Company Amsterdam. presented the inclusion research from Bain and Company. Quite interesting to see is that while the feeling of inclusion is fundamentally the same for all employees, the lived experience of inclusion is driven for various groups by a diverse variety of factors.

We had a discussion on what YOU as a leader can do:
  • by looking internally: 'Challenge Yourself'
  • by looking externally: 'Listen and be curious'
  • when you get it wrong (we all do!): 'Take responsibility'
  • when others get it wrong (we all do!): 'Speak up'.

It was wonderful to openly discuss statements and questions related to the above bullets and we will organize a follow up Virtual Coffee to dive more deeper into the questions presented by Danielle. So, keep you eye on our newsletter!
