Two winners for the DEWIS Award
 
Aimée Sakes and Jorine Eeftens were the best female PhD students at TU Delft in 2018. On Monday, 4 March 2019, they both received the DEWIS Award. Rob Mudde, Vice Rector Magnificus/Vice President Education of TU Delft: ‘It was extremely difficult to decide who could get the DEWIS award! All the candidates are exceptional.’

How can we support equality, diversity and inclusion?
 
At this year’s DEWIS diversity symposium Professor Roni Reiter-Palmon of the University of Nebraska discussed the effects of diversity on team creativity and the role of inclusive leadership. Dr. Caroline Dessent from York University presented highlights from the department’s work to support women in science.

Partners’ leave extended
 

On 1 January 2019, the parental leave for partners is increased from 2 to 5 days of paid parental leave as a result of the enactment of the new Additional Parental Leave Introduction Act (Wet invoering extra geboorteverlof, WIEG).

 
Much attention for (gender) diversity in science letter Van Engelshoven (OCW)
 
Minister Van Engelshoven (OCW) describes the importance of increasing diversity among people and in scientific perspectives as crucial for the quality of Dutch science. Changes must be made in academic culture where predominantly masculine qualities are rewarded. Start Dutch Inclusivity Monitor: research into inclusiveness in Dutch business
 
Practice and science are joining forces to find the ingredients of successful inclusiveness policies. Utrecht University, together with the ADG services group, launched the Dutch Inclusivity Monitor (NIM). University Professor and social psychologist Naomi Ellemers is co-initiator of the NIM and is the head of the research team. ‘We will investigate policy-making and implementation of inclusive employership.’ DEWIS recommended the Executive Board of the TU Delft to participate.

The Lancet: Advancing women in science, medicine and global health
 
February 8 2019, The Lancet published a theme issue on advancing women in science, medicine, and global health, with the aim of showcasing research, commentary, and analysis that provide new explanations and evidence for action towards gender equity. The overwhelming conclusion from this collection of work is that, to achieve meaningful change, actions must be directed at transforming the systems that women work within—making approaches informed by feminist analyses essential.
